Here’s an interesting thing I did today as I was trying to decide on a Generic Logo for myself. I thought about how a lot of what I do taps into several different art forms, sciences, and meditations. Instead of being so bold, yet I am that bold, as claiming the universe, I decided I would claim the Earth. The Earth isn’t someone’s copyright is it? Well at least this one is mine. I made this 3D earth using 3DStudio Max and textures available on the internet. Some of these textures I have had for over ten years. I combined them together to produce a pretty good looking (believable) Earth. I don’t know what the “G” means with the arrow but I thought it might draw some attention. I’m being careful not to make it look like someone else’s trademark. For now, it will be my generic trademark.

This is a stylized logo based on a shield found in North America. This design caught my eye after I discovered it on a website about mythos. The description that came with it definitely attracted me. The shield spoke to me so well I found that it represented me and my quest to make great designs (as well as a providing a great hosting service).

If I can recall the description in my own words: the eye on the hand represents a warrior of knowledge, or at least, knowledge of our gift to hold sight. The two rattlesnakes tied around each other, surrounding the eye-in-hand, represent the fire of chaos that is all around us and is waiting to leap out and bite us. Tying of the rattlesnakes may represent a sacred duality between opposing forces (nature) and the eye-in-hand (Humans) being surrounded by that duality, represents our inability to escape it but know that it is there and be ready for it. The fact that the image was printed on a shield-like object re-affirms the protection power of this glyph.

Here are some samples of work that I’ve done over the last 3 years. This just a small amount of flyers that I’ve worked on. I can’t possibly put all of them here due to the time constraints. It actually took me 3 hours to write captions for about 90 samples of my work. It only took less than 3 minutes to upload all of it. You can say that the work of building this portfolio is 10 percent planning and 90 percent persistence.

True Heavy Metal has been a project I have been on for over ten years. We’re working on a concept that, in the past, wouldn’t work because of the way we were inhibited with the technology back then. Now we’re freed up to make a lot of our ideas come true and quickly. Coming in near the end of 2009 TrueHeavyMetal.com will be opening to facilitate what it used to do with mp3.com back in the day when it was a pure site and not purchased by someone else. The interest has always been in providing quality music source. We rely on a patented process of collegiate voting mixed with democratic bipartisanship. The idea is that only quality music will be allowed to come close to being accepted by the community. Before the community can vote on the music it must meet the code.

(To the right) I made for myself a colorful flyer depicting the nature of my business. This flyer has been well accepted and I give discounts to clients who mention this flyer. The interesting thin is my phone number has changed a lot but I assure you this is my current phone number on this flyer.

<img class="size-full wp-image-30" title="foreversend_forestvilleclub" src="http://gavinmccall.com/design/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/foreversend_forestvilleclub.jpg" alt=""Forestville Flyer" using "Forever's End" Logo by Markus Daimeion I, used with permission (© 2009 Forever's Industries.) Featuring "metal skeleton piece" by Gavin D McCall © 2009

(To the left) You might have noticed flyers like this. My band, Forever’s End, has a mascot (who’s name is reserved for the stage) and we have been slowly allowing him to grow and mature as the band has matured over the years. In this piece I use public domain pictures of wildfires mixed with special flame affects by me. I also added trees and rubble to the scene. I was going to have another artist add roots to the trees but the project came to crunch time and we had to quickly get this flyer out there.

"Glorya Eyeam" Flyer featuring "Glorya Eye" Logo (© 2006 Glorya glorya@eyeam.org)

(To the right) You can see an example of my logo work here in a flyer dedicated my friend Glorya. She told me that it was years of yearning for this logo but she either didn’t have the time or could not find an artist that would capture her vision. I was able to do this logo in just a few hours. I used Adobe Photoshop to make the Taoist eyeliner motif. I will be releasing this custom brush as soon as possible.

<img class="size-full wp-image-29" title="FE_ROCKITROOM_080314" src="http://gavinmccall.com/design/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/FE_ROCKITROOM_080314.jpg" alt="Uses "Forever's End" Logo by Markus Daimeion I with permission. (© 2008 Forever's Industries) Uses misc. logos used with permission.

(To the left) Another flyer for my band. This is your standard silhouette adapted from public domain pictures of crowds. I then separated them by layer and used a variation glows. We had a great time performing at this concert. There was a wonderful turn out and we had a lot fun.

"SoNA Hot Water Heater" Flyer (© 2008 Solar of North America)

(To the right) Here is a flyer made for SoNA and it features one of their Hot Water Heaters for sale. I developed the logo on the flyer and was guided by my client to arrange the text just precisely the way they wanted it. This flyer was also well received.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-36" title="vc_joinvc" src="http://gavinmccall.com/design/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/vc_joinvc-300x150.jpg" alt=""Join VC We Bite" Flyer for Second Life (© 2009 The Vampire Club.
Finally, I am pleased to show you a flyer I developed for VC Studios, to be used in Second Life. This flyer can be found near the Bloodstone Gallery in the Foyle Gully region.

I made this today after seeing that a background process I was using to perfect Twitter backgrounds might benefit the community. During the course of working on my new Twitter background, which isn’t out yet, I developed this Ultimate Twitter Template. I used facts found on the W3 Schools page at http://tr.im/BrowsersDisplay to determined what screen resolutions I cared about. I also included into this template a layer that has an ID batch that is 128 x 600 that best conforms with the 1024 x 768 resolution. I recommend manipulating the document however you think best to position your content the way you want it. The “Guide” layer contains information about the template and a 3d guide that helps one position content in relationship to a tunnel. Content at the end of the tunnel is rarely seen on screens from 800 x 600 to 1024 x 768. However, on the higher resolutions, more of the content is revealed, and therefore more variation of what you’re able to accomplish with your background. This ultimately benefits Twitter users and anyone else who wants a background that is static but still extensible (doesn’t have to change but variates for each display resolution). This template maxes out at 1600 x 1200. If you are concerned about displays larger than that, simply increase the canvas size but make sure its justified to the upper left hand corner, or the origin of the image.

I made this today after seeing that a background process I was using to perfect Twitter backgrounds might benefit the community. During the course of working on my new Twitter background, which isn’t out yet, I developed this Ultimate Twitter Template.

Wow this is pretty cool. It took us only a couple days to figure out what we were going to do. It took us years to get to the point where we had time to do it. Now this is what I was able to come up with, a new look for The Vampire Club. Using concepts provided by M.F. Designs as well as ideas I had about how the site should look, I think I was able to come up with a design that will last and the community will like. Boy was it fun making the graphics for my favorite community website ever. I used Artisteer 2 to generate the images I needed and then I modified and/or composited them with my pictures and reintroduced the images into Artisteer. Exporting again, I was able to further modify the themes generated by my VC2009 design. The cool thing about working with Artisteer is I am able to make my designs into a theme that can work across multiple Web 2.0 platforms. For instance, you probably wouldn’t notice when navigating the website that you are moving between such Web 2.0 solutions as Drupal, WordPress, and more! With the ability to make the design conform across multiple platforms, it gives the user an seamless experience as they navigate the site.

Programs used to make this theme: Aristeer 2, Adobe Fireworks, Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, Fractal Painter, EditPlus, Textpad

I was setting up to record music and video in my room this morning when I came across a neat idea for a wallpaper and so I slapped it together and this is what I got. What do you think? I’d love it if you left some comments here. I’m really putting myself out there as an artist. I was able to build this image using a composite of a Hubble Space Telescope shot, picture of me on stage with Forever’s End, and the Forever’s End Logo.

Click on the image to jump to the large 1024×768 version! Go ahead and download it and try it on your desktop!

Just in case you are curious when my band is playing next jump to the next event marked on calendar by clicking here.
